
There you are, discussing your relationship with your former spouse. Conventions will deem that you refer to them as your ex. But it doesn't fit. While ex-husband, or ex-wife, is correct - it goes no where near an accurate description of your relationship. In the case of Cassandra and Walker Schwartz, their change in marital status did not express the relationship that remained. As co-parents their job as parents to their young son, Jace, meant that something new emerged. The marriage was over, but the rest still needed to be worked through. When faced with explaining this, there was no word to describe their relationship. Cassandra felt this hesitation when she sought a way to introduce Walker and their relationship into a conversation.
